DICP Symposium Special Fund
Under the “Knowledge Innovation Program” of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chinese scientists are encouraged to seek extensive and in-depth collaborations with international science and technology community. In recognizing this demand, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) has established “DICP Symposium Special Fund”, by which the scientists from the Institute will be financially funded to organize the “Gordon Research Conferences” type Symposia or Workshops on selected topics of the institute’s interest. The purpose of this fund is to promote the international cooperation and exchange for upgrading the R&D level of DICP.

      DICP has held the three DICP Science Forums-DICP Symposium(I) on Catalysis from 16 -18 October 2003, DICP-Symposium(II)on Marine Biotechnology from 15 -16 October 2003 and DICP Symposium(III) on Science & Technology of Nano-Catalysis from 26 - 27 May 2004.

The First DICP Science Forum-DICP Symposium (I) on Catalysis was supported by the DICP Symposium Special Fund, and was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation Committee, Chinese Academy of Sciences and DICP. The theme of the Symposium was on the future development of catalytic science and technology. The chairman of the Symposium was Prof. Can LI in DICP. Professor M. Che, Chairman of International Catalysis Conference, Dr. John N. Armor, Chairman of North America Catalysis Society, Professor J. Vedrine, Former Chairman of European Catalysis Society, and Professor J.W. Niemantsverdriet, Chairman of European Catalysis Society, were invited to participate in the Symposium. Other distinguished guests included members of the International Advisory Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis of DICP and prominent catalytic scientists of the catalytic research institutes of China. A total of about 150 participants coming from academic and industrial sectors, as well as from the National Science Foundation Committee and Chinese Academy of Sciences were present in the Symposium.

DICP Symposium (II) on Marine Biotechnology 2003 was successfully held in Dalian from October 15-16 2003. The Symposium was organized by the Marine Bioproducts Engineering Group with the theme "molecular marine biotechnology for sustainable exploitation". Two topics on marine sponge biotechnology and biohydrogen from microalgae were discussed. Over sixty scientists from seven countries attended this Symposium. The foreign scientists came from Göttingen University (Germany), Institute of Chemical Bio-Molecules (Italy), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (USA), Waseda University (Japan), and Korean Ocean Research & Development Institute (Korea), Institute of Basic Biological Problems Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia). Domestic participants came from ten Universities and Institutes, including Qingdao Institute of Oceanology, CAS, Beijing Genomics Institute of CAS, and Xiamen University.

DICP Symposium(III) on Science & Technology of Nano-Catalysis was held at the grand hall of DICP on 26th and 27th May. Besides DICP scientists, more than 10 famous catalytic scientists from Germany, Singapore, Britain and USA also participated in the Forum. The participants delivered plenary lectures and undergone academic exchanges on areas involving the preparation and characterization of nano-materials and nano particles, and catalysts with nano-structures. Simulations and theoretical computations of nano catalysts, as well as their applications were also discussed. The Forum was supported financially by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Society of Germany.

DICP Symposium (IV) on Molecular Dynamics was opened on July 21st at the Bang Cui Dao Hotel in Dalian. Approximately 30 prominent scientists of the molecular dynamic field from the States, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, South Korea, Britain, Singapore, Portugal, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated in the Workshop, among them were Prof. Dan M. Neumark of UC Berkeley, Prof. Alec M. Wodtke of UC Santa Barbara, Prof. Roger E. Miller of North Carolina, Prof. John Zhang of New York University, Prof. LIU Koping of the Institute of Atoms and Molecules of Taiwan, Prof. David H. Parker of Nijmegen University, and Prof. Piergiorgio Casavecchia of Perugia University. More than 30 distinguished scientists from inland China were present at the Workshop, including five Member of CAS--Prof. ZHANG Cunhao, Prof. LOU Nanquan, Prof. SHA Guohe, Prof. ZHU Qihe and Prof. HE Guozhong. There were also about 100 graduate students from Chinese Science and Technology University, Tsing Hwa University, Peking University, Beijing Chemistry Institute of CAS, Anhui Optical Machinery Institute of CAS, Shandong University and Dalian University of Technology participated in the Workshop. 22 professors had presented lectures at the Workshop, which reflected the newest experimental and theoretical progresses as well as frontier researches in the field of molecular dynamics. The Workshop was chaired by Prof. YANG Xueming, Director of State Key Laboratory of Molecular Dynamics of DICP.
